While I always enjoy a good pour-over coffee or a cappuccino, my go-to drink throughout the year, regardless of the weather, is cold (preferably iced) coffee. Whenever I visit Starbucks, my usual choice is a cold brew. Occasionally, when I’m in the mood for something different, I order one of their newer creations topped with cold foam.
Full disclosure: In the past, I was a fan of the unsweetened Starbucks Iced Coffee, but these days, it just doesn’t taste the same to me. Perhaps it’s because iced coffee has become less popular as cold brew has gained traction. I’ve transitioned to cold brew now – I prefer its rich and smooth flavor over the somewhat bitter and diluted taste of traditional SBUX iced coffee.
Now if you find cold brew too strong or you prefer your coffee on the sweeter side, you might still enjoy the Starbucks Iced Coffee.
Here’s how Starbucks describes their iced coffee:
“Our freshly brewed Starbucks® Iced Coffee Blend is served chilled and unsweetened over ice. It’s approachable and refreshing, bringing out flavors of malted milk chocolate and brown-sugar sweetness. This blend of washed and sun-dried Latin American coffees was designed to be enjoyed unsweetened or customized to your liking.”

Why is my Starbucks Iced Coffee so sweet?
Starbucks baristas use classic syrup, the chain’s version of simple syrup, which contains 80 calories per 30-milliliter serving. This syrup is made from sugar and water to prevent sugar grains from settling at the bottom of your iced beverage as it dissolves better than granulated sugar in cold pink drinks. According to the Starbucks menu, a tall iced coffee contains three pumps of classic syrup, a grande has four, and a venti includes six pumps.
How to make Starbucks Iced Coffee less sweet?
If you prefer less sweetness in your iced coffee, you can customize your order by requesting fewer pumps of classic syrup. You can also opt for another sweetener like Splenda. If you prefer flavored sweetness, you can order your iced coffee with syrups like caramel, hazelnut, toffee nut, or vanilla.

Did the iced coffee recipe change at Starbucks?
I suspected that they changed the recipe and these comments from reddit seem to agree:
They changed something with the iced coffee recipe and it doesn’t quite taste the same anymore. Iced coffee used to be my go to drink but now I drink cold brew instead since the iced coffee tastes like coffee flavored water.
I’ve tried it at several locations just to see if it was the brewing…. It tasted awful at all the Starbucks. I’m really bummed since iced coffee with white mocha has been my go to for years and years.
SBUX Customer Reviews for the Iced Coffee

Very good iced coffee, but they get their price. Could be more efficient.
The usual assortment of beverages and some food options, but IMHO they could be working more efficiently and the food options could have been more extensive. People are anxious about getting on a plane.
To the positive, the taste and quality of my iced coffee was very good. However, I just have a problem about paying $6.69 for a large iced coffee, with regular milk, nothing special, but that’s Starbucks. The price was a mystery to me as I could not clearly see it on the posted menu.
